The classic: enough invested that a safe withdrawal rate covers your annual expenses.
What FIRE actually means
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. The idea is simple: once your investments can cover your living costs, work becomes optional. The number that gets you there is your annual expenses divided by a safe withdrawal rate. At the widely used 4% rate, that is 25 times what you spend in a year.
The flavors of FIRE
- Regular FIRE is the classic version: enough invested to cover your normal expenses.
- Lean FIRE funds a modest budget, so the number is smaller and closer.
- Fat FIRE funds a more comfortable lifestyle, so the number is larger.
- Coast FIRE is the amount you need invested now so growth alone carries you to full FIRE by retirement, with no more contributions.
- Barista FIRE uses part-time income to cover some expenses, which lowers the portfolio you need.

Common questions
What is a FIRE number?▾
Your FIRE number is the amount you need invested to live off your portfolio. The common rule of thumb uses a 4% withdrawal rate, which means your number is your annual expenses times 25. Spend $60,000 a year and your number is about $1.5 million.
What is coast FIRE?▾
Coast FIRE is the amount you need invested right now so that compound growth alone reaches your full FI number by retirement age, without adding another dollar. Once you hit it, you can stop saving for retirement and let time do the rest.
What is barista FIRE?▾
Barista FIRE is when a part-time job or side income covers part of your expenses, so your portfolio only has to fund the rest. That lowers your FIRE number, since you are not asking your investments to cover everything.
What is the difference between lean and fat FIRE?▾
They are the same math with different spending. Lean FIRE funds a modest budget, so the number is smaller and you get there sooner. Fat FIRE funds a more comfortable lifestyle, so the number is larger. Both use the same withdrawal-rate calculation.
